If you’ve ever found yourself watching a Romeo Makota mix, you’ll know it’s almost impossible not to notice the scenery.

That combination of music and travel has become his signature, attracting more than 558,000 YouTube subscribers and turning every set into something that feels personal and cinematic.

From humble beginnings in Limpopo to commanding dance floors, Romeo Makota is building a highly respected music brand.

As part of TJR 100 Creators, we caught up with Romeo Makota to talk about the evolution of his sound, staying true to his craft, and what’s next in his musical journey.

When the music stops and the cameras are off, who is Romeo Makota beyond the DJ and producer?

I’m a simple person who values God, faith, and personal growth. I enjoy spending time in the studio, creating spiritual music, and planning for the future. I come from Mohlaletse Village in Ga-Sekhukhune, Limpopo, Stays in Pretoria and those roots keep me humble. Everything I do is driven by the belief that hard work, consistency, and trusting God will always pay off.

You’ve released a number of singles and EPs over the years. Can fans expect a larger project anytime soon?

Yes, definitely. I’m currently working on my next Amapiano EP, and I’m excited for people to hear it. Every project I’ve released has been part of my journey, but this EP tells a bigger story about who I am as an artist and where my sound is heading. I’m taking my time to make sure it’s something fans will enjoy for years to come.

Your YouTube mixes are often filmed in some of South Africa’s most beautiful locations, making them just as visually captivating as they are musically. What’s the thinking behind choosing these settings?

South Africa has incredible landscapes, and I wanted my mixes to celebrate that beauty while creating a unique experience for viewers. The location becomes part of the performance—it creates a mood and tells a story alongside the music. My goal has always been to give people more than just a DJ set; I want them to feel like they’re travelling with me through the music and the scenery while showcasing the beauty of our country.

You’ve been making music for many years, and your sound continues to evolve. What do you attribute that consistency and growth to?

I started DJing in 2012, then fell in love with music production and later Amapiano. Every stage of my journey has taught me something new. Working with artists like Eemoh and Nokwazi has helped me grow as a producer, and I’ve never stopped improving. I believe consistency comes from always being willing to learn, improve, and stay true to yourself.

The music industry is constantly changing, with new genres and trends emerging all the time. How have you managed to stay grounded and remain true to your own sound?

I respect every new trend, but I don’t chase them. I focus on making music that feels genuine to me. That’s one of the reasons I continue to develop my own sound through StePiano, blending the energy of Amapiano with the rhythm and emotion of 3-Step Afro House. My goal isn’t just to follow the future of music—it’s to help shape it.

Anyone who follows you knows your content is unapologetically about music—no gimmicks, just what your audience came for. Why has staying true to that approach been so important to you?

The music has always been the priority. I started uploading mixes because I genuinely wanted to share great music, and the audience responded in an incredible way. Today, more than 558,000 people have subscribed to my YouTube channel because of that passion. I’ve never wanted to rely on gimmicks—I want people to remember Romeo Makota for quality music, consistency, authenticity, and creating unforgettable experiences.
