Rising Deep House sensation Judy Jay and culture-shifting powerhouse Oscar Mbo have joined creative forces for the release of ‘Love Theory’, a deeply soulful and emotionally charged single that marks a bold new chapter for South African House music.

‘Love Theory’ is a genre-blending record that draws inspiration from gospel and soul, weaving in a thoughtful sample of Kirk Franklin’s ‘Love Theory’ while staying rooted in the pair’s signature Deep House stylings. Judy Jay’s graceful yet commanding presence meets Oscar Mbo’s seasoned musicality in a collaboration that feels both fresh and timeless.

The Joburg Reporter sat down with Judy Jay to explore the woman behind the decks and capture the essence of her persona. A familiar name in the deep house community, Judy Jay revealed that following her collaboration with the renowned and stylish Oscar Mbo, she is set to release After The Storm 2.

Q. You released your album in 2021(After The Storm), which was packaged as deep house. Why deep house, and should we expect another deep house project?

·       I  have always been a fan of  deep house music from a very young age  , that’s literally the only genre I listen to most of the time, and yes, of course, I’ll be dropping After The Storm 2 recent project

Q. With music evolving, and Amapiano has been centre stage for a while, what’s the current uptake on deep house?

Deep house music is also evolving, it’s becoming more commercial, and it’s being appreciated by the general public  and at this rate, it will be part of the mainstream eventually.

Q. You have played alongside the greats, such as Vinny Da Vinci, in your journey of being a DJ and producer. What’s the one lesson you always uphold to this day?

·       Always stay true to yourself, show up, stay humble and always remember that no one is bigger than the music

Q. Female DJs are slowly getting into the DJ space. How does it make you feel, considering that it’s a male-dominated space?

·I’m very happy to see that because our industry, especially the type of genre I play, is dominated by men so seeing more women tapping into the space gives me a very great pleasure

Q. Soul Candy has pioneered a lot of careers. How important is it to study music and be associated with institutions that open doors of empowerment?

·Most South African musicians are self-taught, so these institutions teach us the business side of the music (bookings, contracts, royalties and overall, how to navigate the industry)

Q.Best music festival you’ve played at, or wish to make your debut at?

·       The best festival I have played at was Spring Fiesta.

·       The festival I wish to play at is Tomorrowland.

Q. Circling back to your first set, what’s the best memory of it?

Unfortunately, there wasn’t any best memory as I was taken off stage after playing my second song, it was a very painful experience for me.

Q. I know you might not want to answer this, LOL. But who are your top 5 DJs in South Africa?

Dj shimza

Dj black coffee

Lameizholworthy

Dj Vinny da Vinci

Dj Christos

Q. Lastly, 3 things you will always travel with, whether to a DJ event, Family gatherings or vacation?

– My headphones

– USB’s

– PC
