President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Sunday, 13 July 2025 following the allegations of political interference in the SAPS by Lietenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
The President has nominated Professor Firoz Cachalia as the interim minister of police. A judicial commission of inquiry will be set up to look into allegations of corruption and abuse of power in law enforcement.
Deputy Chief Justice Madlanga will chair the structure. He is retiring from the Constitutional Court at the end of July 2025 after many years of service, and will therefore be able to give his full time and attention to the work of this commission.
The president says he has decided to put Police Minister Senzo Mchunu on special leave while investigations into alleged corruption and abuse of power continue. This takes effect immediately.
The incoming acting police minister, Firoz Cachalia, is currently a professor at the University of the Witwatersrand’s School of Law and a former Gauteng Economic Development MEC, as well as Community Safety MEC.
He was appointed three years ago as chairperson of National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council (NACAC) to advise government on the preventative measures, institutional capabilities and resources required to combat fraud and corruption and prevent any recurrence of ‘State capture’.
