When global superstar Doja Cat stepped onto the stage in Pretoria for the Move Afrika concert, it felt less like a tour stop and more like a cultural homecoming.

Presented by Global Citizen as part of its panAfrican touring initiative Move Afrika, the show delivered what can only be described as a masterclass in
live performance, a night where music, identity, and world-class production met in perfect harmony.

Held at the iconic SunBet Arena, the event was meticulously planned from start to finish.

From parking ogistics and ticket access to the seamless movement of crowds into the venue, the organization of the concert immediately set the tone for what would become a flawless experience.

It was clear that the collaborative effort between Global Citizen, Big Concerts, and tour partners like Cisco had produced a live music event that met international standards while celebrating Africa’s growing place on the global
touring map.

But the real magic began when Doja Cat took the stage.

Oh, from the moment the lights dimmed, the energy in the arena shifted. Backed by a simplistic yet bold set design and immersive stage visuals, Doja Cat delivered a performance that transported us to South Africa.

It felt as though she was experiencing it for the first time, a place where her roots are grounded. She exhibited a level of enthusiasm, precision, and emotional investment that artists typically reserve for career-defining shows.

She moved effortlessly through a catalogue of hits, including fan favourites like Say So, alongside newer material that showcased her artistic evolution.

Yet what stood out most was her ability to create an atmosphere that welcomed everyone.

Whether fans knew every lyric or were simply there to experience the moment, the performance invited the entire arena to participate.

And participate they did. At one point during the show, a chant began to ripple through the crowd: “Zandile! Zandile!”

It wasn’t just a name though, it was a gesture of affection. Born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, Doja Cat carries a name that reflects her South African heritage.

Hearing thousands of fans embrace that name seemed to strike an emotional chord. The louder the crowd chanted “Zandile,” the more she leaned into the moment, delivering each performance with increasing passion.

It was a rare and beautiful exchange between artist and audience it was a reminder that music is often at its most powerful when it connects
identity, culture, and belonging.

The audience themselves were part of the spectacle. Fans arrived dressed for the occasion, channeling bold fashion choices that felt perfectly aligned with Doja Cat’s aesthetic.

It transformed the arena into something more than a concert, it became a living expression of creativity and self-expression.

Beyond the music, Move Afrika represents something larger. The initiative by Global Citizen aims to build a sustainable touring circuit across African cities while creating jobs and opportunities within the continent’s creative industries.

Local production crews, technicians, vendors, and artists play a key role
in bringing these events to life, ensuring that the economic and cultural impact extends far beyond a single night of entertainment.

That broader vision was evident throughout the evening. The production value was worlclass, yet the spirit of the event remained distinctly African.

By the time the final song ended and the lights came back on, one thing was clear: this was more than just a concert.

It was a moment. It was history. It was a homecoming. A moment where a global artist reconnected with her roots, where South African fans showed
overwhelming love, and where a movement aimed at uplifting the continent’s creative economy played out in real time.

If this was Doja Cat’s first major performance on South African soil, and from the looks of things, it certainly won’t be her last. Judging by the roaring reception she received, Mzansi has already claimed her, we won her heart.

And whenever our “Zandile” decides to return, South Africa will be ready.
Rating: 10/10 it was a spectacular celebration of music, culture, and connection.
