The Joburg Reporter sat down with the afro soul sensation Nkonzo, as he was launching his new album; UBIZO. The raw talent was discovered by the music maestro, Professor and author Sipho Sithole.
Listening to the album, the first key, voice note echo’s Native Rhythms, a stable that gave musical birth to the greats; such as Thandiswa Mazwai, The Soil and Zakwe. Nkonzo is no different, the story told in his magical voice is in the music.
- The genre is more AFRO soul, what made you agree to it, considering that the sound is not trendy for the new generation ?
Well, AFRO soul is a powerful genre that’s close to my heart. I agree to it because it’s not just about following trends but about creating music that speaks to the soul. AFRO soul allows me to blend traditional sounds with modern elements, creating something unique and authentic.
- Akuvumi; resonates with a lot of men, what can you say about parents /families that support their offspring’s dreams?
Parents and families play a huge role in supporting their offspring’s dreams. It’s amazing to see families embracing their children’s passions and encouraging them to pursue their calling. My own family has been a huge source of inspiration and support, and I’m grateful for that.
- Most of your tracks are life-centric, such as Sonani, Abasemzini. What’s the one message you would like to convey with the album Ubizo?
With Ubizo, I want to convey that everyone has a purpose, and it’s never too late to find it. I hope my music inspires people to connect with their emotions, find strength in their struggles, and pursue their passions. It’s about healing, growth, and embracing our true selves.
- It may be too soon, but have you thought of artists you would like to collaborate with?
I’m always open to collaborating with talented artists who share my vision. I’d love to work with artists who are passionate about creating meaningful music that inspires and uplifts others.
- 3 things you travel with?
My Phone to capture those random creativity waves.
