It is unsurprising that Gog’Zille’s roast had Joburgers flocking into Sandton on Friday night last week. The sandton convention centre was abounding with A list content creators, reality TV stars & celebrities. The roast panellists were spitting bar for bar, it’s difficult to tell who won the night.
I myself got roasted by Helen Zille for my very small mic – get your head out of the gutter! I mean that literally, I used a small mic to interview Helen on the red carpet. ‘’this is the smallest I have ever seen, and it’s yours!’’ said Helen, and all the journalists burst into laughter. She came prepared, guns blazing!
On the red carpet, Rapper Gigi Lamayne and Nambitha Ben-Mazwi were ecstatic about the roast, anticipating jaw dropping Gogzille’s famous twitter comebacks but this time around, live on stage. And she did not disappoint.
A shocking start to the show…
Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille slipped and fell to her face as she walked across the stage. It was time for the panellists to take their seats on stage and unfortunately aunty pat had a rough start to the roast at the hands of a slippery floor. Fortunately, she wasn’t injured.
As expected, she addressed the elephant in the room when she took the mic to have her turn at the roast. She certainly did not stand out albeit her coloured aunty jokes kept her going. Worth noting that Dr Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh mopped the floor with her. The convention centre gasped when he said Aunty pat probably has a political STD as she has jumped from one political party to another.
The gay jokes.
If my memory serves me well, there has always been a few gay jokes thrown around at every comedy roast. This year’s gay jokes were somewhat measured, witty, and respectful – dispelling the notion that the queer community does not want any jokes directed at them. No one complained after the show. You can have people laughing till they’re falling out of their seats—without stepping on anyone’s toes.
Londie London, highlight of the night.

I must admit, I had seen the name Londi London before but didn’t care enough to find out who this person is. During the roast, I quickly googled ‘Londie London’ and turns out she is a former Real Housewives of Durban cast member. Her ex-boyfriend, allegedly is the late Sphamandla Mabonga. According to TimesLIVE, Sphamandla Mabonga was among the men involved in the shooting incident on 24 Central outside the Solo restaurant in Sandton, he was shot dead.
According to a Kaya News report, Mabonga was under investigation by law enforcement agencies in a murder-for-hire incident over the past three years.
You can imagine the punchlines that came out of this. The controversy of it all had me gagging the whole night.
Helen ‘Gogzile’ Zille Humanised
Joburgers finally got to experience the human being behind the rough tackling politics of the Democratic Alliance [DA]. I had a brief chat with her before the roast and she confirmed that she will be running for FedEX chair next year at the DA’s elective conference.
The roast of Helen Zille will be available on Showmax soon.
