As February embraces the season of love, Joel Zuma is gearing up to bring the soulful, romantic tunes of Luther Vandross to life. With his rich musical background, including covers of legendary artists such as Barry White, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Jabu Khanyile, Joel has long been captivated by the music of Luther Vandross. His deep connection to Vandross’s songs sparked the idea of paying tribute to the icon with a full show dedicated to his timeless music.

Ahead of his sold-out tribute performance at the Joburg Theater on February 14th and 15th, I sit down with Joel to learn more about his journey and what audiences can expect.

Q: What’s significant about Luther Vandross, considering that there was a pool of greats you could have chosen from, such as Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, and Boyz II Men?

Joel Zuma: I’ve been singing for years in various settings—musical theater, intimate concerts, weddings, and more. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to cover songs by some incredible artists, including Barry White, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and even Jabu Khanyile. But it’s always when I perform a Luther Vandross song that people keep asking for more. That’s when I realized there was something special about his music that resonates with people on a deeper level. That’s what inspired me to do a whole show that pays tribute to the greatest vocalist of all time, Luther Vandross.

Q: You’ve shared the stage with international icons, such as Hugh Masekela. What did that experience mean musically and personally?

Joel Zuma: Bra Hugh was a legend like no other, and he left an indelible mark on the global music industry. To be in his presence and to perform alongside him was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have met him. He actually approached me after hearing me sing in Rosebank and wanted to sign me to his record label. It was such a humbling moment, and it felt like a stamp of approval, confirming that I was heading in the right direction. Unfortunately, I had just signed with EMI for my first album When the Time Is Right, so I had to honor that contract, but the opportunity to work with someone like Bra Hugh is something I’ll never forget.

Q: It’s said that Sundays are for lovers. You’ve sold out two days for your upcoming show. What do you hope to achieve with this tribute, and what do you want the audience to take away from the two nights?

Joel Zuma: Last year, our show was sold out, and the response was overwhelming. It’s clear that people are hungry for this kind of live performance. A show like ours, performed in one of the most prestigious theaters in the country, is a rare experience. My goal for these two nights is simple: I want people to forget their worries, sing along, and fall in love all over again. The show is all about celebrating love—whether you’re in a relationship or single, I want the audience to reminisce about the special moments that Luther’s music has helped create. For couples, I hope they’re reminded of why they fell in love, and for everyone else, it’s a chance to go down memory lane through Luther’s extensive catalog of romantic ballads.

Q: There’s talk about two surprise guests making appearances. What does collaboration mean to you, especially for a show centered around love?

Joel Zuma: I’m thrilled about the surprise guests, but I can’t reveal too much just yet! What I can say is that they are two incredibly talented singers with impressive television and theater backgrounds. I’m really excited that they agreed to be a part of the show, and I know their appearances will be a big highlight for the audience. As for collaboration, it’s always exciting to work with other artists who bring something unique to the table. For a show like this, especially when celebrating love, collaboration makes the experience even more special for the audience.

Q: Should the audience expect to hear any of your own songs during the show?

Joel Zuma: Yes, absolutely! I’m beyond excited to announce that I’ve just finished recording my new album, Essence of Love, which I’ll be releasing this Valentine’s month. After years of putting it off due to other commitments, I’m finally ready to share it with the world. I’ll be performing a few songs from the album during the show, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it. It’s been a long time coming, and I’m so grateful to finally be able to share this new chapter of my music with my fans.

Q: What can people expect from your upcoming shows at the Joburg Theater on February 14th and 15th?

Joel Zuma: It’s going to be a magical night of music, love, and memories. With the tribute to Luther Vandross, we’re going to experience the kind of live performance that’s rare to find in South Africa. There will be a lot of singing along, a lot of reminiscing, and just an overall unforgettable experience. I’m also excited about the surprise guests and a few songs from my upcoming album. It’s going to be a celebration of love in every form, and I can’t wait to share that with the audience.

As we celebrate the month of love, Joel Zuma’s tribute to Luther Vandross promises to be a memorable experience for all. With stunning renditions of Vandross’s iconic songs, surprise guest appearances, and a preview of his new album Essence of Love, Joel’s performance at the Joburg Theater on February 14th and 15th is a must-see. Whether you’re in love, single, or just a fan of great music, this show will take you on a journey through the timeless magic of Luther Vandross’s music.
