The air was filled with excitement and hope at Mashemong Primary School as learners, teachers, and community members gathered to witness the unveiling of newly refurbished toilet facilities. For years, the school has struggled with broken, unhygienic toilets and unreliable water access—conditions that made attending school a challenge, especially for young girls.
This transformation, , unveiled on World Toilet Day by SC Johnson and Duck, has brought a sense of pride and relief to the school community. Beyond being a vital infrastructure upgrade, the initiative signifies a renewed focus on providing learners with the dignity and safety they deserve.

For 12-year-old Ayanda, a Grade 6 learner, the new facilities are life-changing. “Before, we were scared to use the toilets because they were dirty and broken. It’s so much better now—we feel like we’re being cared for,” she said with a bright smile.
Restoring Dignity, Empowering Futures

The state of toilets at Mashemong had long been a source of frustration and embarrassment for learners. Without proper facilities, many pupils faced health risks and discomfort that affected their ability to focus on their education. For some girls, the lack of sanitary conditions even meant missing school during their menstrual cycles.
The revamp of the toilets, along with a colorful mural celebrating hygiene and community, symbolizes a brighter future for the school’s learners. “A clean and safe environment is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for young minds to thrive,” said the school principal.
A Ripple Effect in the Community
This initiative highlights the need for broader support for sanitation in township schools. Poor toilet conditions are a widespread issue, and this project serves as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when communities and organizations unite for a common goal.
The students at Mashemong are already feeling the impact. “We’re excited to come to school now,” said Ayanda. “It’s not just the toilets—they make us feel respected and important.”
The hope is that this meaningful change at Mashemong will inspire similar initiatives across South Africa, ensuring that more learners have the dignity and safety they deserve in their schools.
As the vibrant mural outside the new toilets reads, “Get It Clean, Keep It Fresh .”
