The memory of stepping into the dimly lit production control room, greeted by the studio technical director’s command — “Camera one, move to five, take two, jib move to your right” — consistently plays in my mind as I reflect on my career journey thus far. As I stood there, my eyes wide open with eagerness, trying to figure out the jargon, I felt like a kid in a candy store.
Media has always held a special place in my heart, ranging from the enchanting world of radio to the captivating realms of print and television. Fondly, my mother often jokes that the only remedy for my childhood cries was to have some form of media playing in the background. Fast-forward to today, and that early fascination has blossomed into a fulfilling career as a radio, television, and digital content producer. Here I am, navigating an industry that not only fuels my passion but also propels me toward new heights.
With that said, reality, however, quickly burst my bubble upon entering the industry. While I had elevated the media and creative world in my mind, I soon confronted the challenge of reconciling my passion for crafting compelling content with the practicalities and reality of being a young woman in the workplace, particularly as a freelancer.
And reflecting on my career journey thus far, here are eight key learnings that continue to help me grow:
- Pursue Purpose and Impact.
I’ve often found that producing content that resonates with audiences on a deeper level often stems from understanding your ‘why’. When you are passionate about the message you are conveying, it reflects through your work, leading to a great sense of fulfillment, knowing that in one way or another, you’ve offered a listener or a viewer the tools to navigate whatever issue they may be grappling with. If the content doesn’t move, excite, or challenge you, then you might need to realign.
- Future-Proof Your Career Through Personal Branding.
It’s easy to get lost in the identity of the organization you’re employed in. It is important to set yourself apart and still develop your personal brand outside of your specific job. CEO of The Loeries and Brand Innovation Analyst, Preetesh Sewraj, once said, “Think about your image and what you stand for as a brand; and how you ensure that everything you do goes towards reinforcing those brand values.” He further states that ‘’a lot of people focus on the brand as “people know me” – it should rather be about the fact that people know that you stand for something”.
- Celebrate Small Wins.
A win is a win. As a content producer – nothing beats the feeling of securing a guest that you’ve been gunning for, for ages, crafting a conversation that exceeds your expectation or just the joy of seeing your idea come alive . So no matter what the win is – big or small, celebrate it. Whether you do a small little dance, high five yourself or have a little pep in your step, this strategic tool will help you enhance productivity, motivation, and overall well-being.
- Choose Your Battles.
It’s not every problem that demands a showdown. I’ve often grappled with the delicate balance between my passion for my craft and the frustration of limited resources or support with the potential of hindering the realization of executing great ideas. Learn to discern between minor irritations and challenges that are not worth your energy – particularly those that could affect the output of your work.
- Paper Trail will Save Your Life.
It is often said that there are always three sides to a story: your side, my side, and the truth. You do not want to be caught in a he said, she said situation. Clear communication is always important for successful collaborations. Whether you’re negotiating for a contract, brainstorming, or sharing your ideas – always ensure it’s on email; as this could be your best defense against unpredictable twists and turns thrown at you by the business, a manager, or fellow colleague.
- Get Your Money!
Never make the mistake of underestimating the value you bring to an organization or project. Getting paid, especially as a freelancer is not only about financial transactions but rather about your worth, safeguarding your professional reputations, and yes, paying your bills. While you may get caught up in the busyness of juggling multiple jobs or a major workload, make sure your admin game is on lock. Submit your invoices well ahead of time and make sure they align with the work you have put in. Again, it goes back to paper trail. Payment terms need to be thoroughly communicated and followed through.
- Do Not Burn Bridges.
Someone once said cliché sayings are true so I’m just going to throw in this one – the grass is not greener on the other side. I once read a quote that says don’t burn bridges, you will be surprised how many times you have to cross the same river. The media industry in South Africa is very small. You are likely to bump into the very person you lashed out on before leaving a company and five, ten years down the line, you may perhaps need them. It’s quite a tough one but always conduct yourself in a professional manner. Keep calm and Wooosaah!
- Prioritize Your Self-Care.
Finally, If there’s one takeaway from these reflections, this is it! Don’t forget to take care of yourself amidst the chaos. In an industry known for its demanding schedules, crazy deadlines, and high-pressure environments, self-care often is crucial. I’ve learned that prioritizing my well-being is non-negotiable. Communicate your capacity. Learn to say no. Take regular breaks. Practice mindfulness. Live a balanced life. This will help prevent burnout. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup.
One thing becomes abundantly clear: the creative and media industry is a rollercoaster ride of highs and lows, victories, and challenges (and sometimes – the math doesn’t math when you look at your bank balance). From the exhilarating rush of stepping into the production control room to the sobering reality of navigating workplace tensions and freelance intricacies, each experience has shaped me in profound ways. Have I got it all figured out? Nope! But every day is an opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive in fulfilling your career goals.
