TV Creators Gwydion Beynon and Phathutshedzo Makwarela have done it again by giving us premium TV!

We have new kids on the block, and they are here for it all! Move over, oldies, a new group has arrived and is taking over with the ultimate blend of chaos, comedy, and charisma! Guaranteed to keep you glued to your screens. If you don’t know what I’m talking about yet… I am talking about Youngins.

It is the new telenovela rocking the streets of Showmax. Where chaos is the second nature of the school. It is a peek into the world of what Gen Z get up to at school, with no restrictions!

Imagine a boarding school where drama rivals homework in frequency. This adolescent series unfolds within the confines of a boarding school located in Olifantsfontein, just east of Johannesburg, and it’s irresistibly engrossing. It’s akin to a tumultuous ride of emotions, with every episode leaving you eagerly awaiting the next instalment. The narrative style adeptly interweaves themes of trauma, identity, and societal expectations, pulling viewers further into the lives of the characters as they embark on a voyage of self-discovery and development. In doing so, it sheds light on the genuine obstacles encountered by numerous young individuals in today’s world.

The exploration of sensitive themes such as homosexuality, and abusive parental relationships adds layers of complexity to the story, shedding light on important issues that are often overlooked in our society and in our schools. The writing is impressive in its ability to balance drama with social commentary, making the series both engaging and thought- provoking.

The casting of the series is commendable; kudos to Keneilwe Matidze for casting a crew and bringing together a squad of fresh faces that look like they’ve just stepped out of your own high school magazine! She smashed the casting selection! What I love about Youngins is that when you look at the characters and the actors, they are believable; it is pure realness.

These actors aren’t just playing roles—they’re living them, breathing life into the characters you can’t help but root for them or love to hate them. And can we talk about the chemistry and the flow of the acting? It’s off the charts! Every actor pulls their weight, making the Youngins universe feel as real as your own school days, minus the homework.

Each character effectively contributes to pushing the narrative forward. The actors embody their roles convincingly, bringing depth and authenticity to their characters; their respective struggles also add intrigue to the overall storyline. The casting is perfect in my opinion; every character pulls their weight in advancing the plot, contributing to the overall impact of the series. The cast is refreshing and very talented, with each actor bringing their character to life with authenticity and charisma.

Youngins is a fantastic show that really connects with Gen Zs. It’s more than just a regular soap opera—it reflects the challenges and successes of young people today while keeping you glued to the screen. The story is gripping, the actors are excellent, and it’s getting a lot of well-deserved praise. However, it lacks in diversity. Personally, I’m loving it. It’s relatable, tackles important issues, and is easy to watch. The writing is great, the actors are top-notch, and it gets an 8 out of 10 from me. It’s both entertaining and meaningful.
