Western Cape premier Alan Winde has confirmed that more than 300 structures in Kayamandi informal settlement in Stellenbosch were destroyed due to severe weather currently affecting the Western Cape province. Displaced residents are currently being housed in municipal and community halls.
The South African Weather Service issued a level 9 weather warning for the southern parts of the Cape Winelands and Overberg districts. Level 9 warning is for strong winds which cause fires, disruptive rain resulting in widespread flooding of roads and settlements, causes danger to life due to fast flowing streams and deep water, and widespread damage to property.
Gift of the givers has responded swiftly to the disaster by offering blankets and meals to the displaced residents. Winde says their Emergency and medical teams have been dispatched to assist those who might have lost their chronic medications and those in need of medial attention.
Furthermore, in response to this disaster, the Western Cape government has closed all schools in the Overberg, Cape Winelands and Helderberg areas on Monday due to a Level 9 warning from the SA Weather Services.
